Malé City Land Use Plan
Project Objective
Malé City and the Greater Malé Region are experiencing rapid change and increasing pressure on land and services due to high population density and ongoing developments. Major projects, new regulations, and the impacts of climate change make it important to have a clear, long-term plan for how the city should grow. Malé City Council has launched this project to develop a long-term urban strategy and revised land use plan for Malé City.
Targeted Outcome
• Easier to navigate for everyone — reduce reliance on private vehicles, expand public transport, improve walkability and accessibility, and provide smarter parking. Safe, connected ways to move around make the city more convenient, sustainable and inclusive. • A healthier, more comfortable urban environment — increase green cover, better manage stormwater, and improve waste collection to reduce urban heat and lift quality of life. (SDG 3, 11, 13, 15) • Flexible, responsive development — relocate incompatible land uses and revitalise underutilised areas so the city adapts to changing social, economic and environmental conditions; a more resilient urban fabric. (SDG 3, 8, 9, 11) • Inclusion and accessibility — 'third spaces' for community beyond home and work, equitable access to parks, mosques, public buildings and open spaces, and housing redistributed to meet diverse needs; strengthening social cohesion and civic and economic participation. (SDG 2, 3, 8, 10, 11, 15)
